American Wrestling Association, commonly known as AWA, was one of the most influential professional wrestling promotions in the United States and was founded in 1960 by Verne Gagne. The company was one of the key territories within the classic NWA system and became especially successful throughout the American Midwest. AWA was known for its more sports-oriented wrestling style and helped develop many future superstars, including Hulk Hogan, Shawn Michaels, Scott Hall, and Curt Hennig. Rivalries involving Verne Gagne and Nick Bockwinkel defined much of the promotion’s golden era. During the 1980s, AWA struggled against WWE’s aggressive national expansion. Despite its eventual decline, the promotion remains an important part of wrestling history and a major influence on modern professional wrestling.
