The series was a continuation of Pro Wrestling USA, a cooperative venture between the American Wrestling Association (AWA) and several National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) affiliates. The AWA was founded by Verne Gagne and Wally Karbo and was based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, operating as an independent promotion from 1960 until 1991.
